Larry Goldberg is a philosopher of science, environment, and mind who has applied his interdisciplinary methodology to program development at the University of California, San Diego; Texas A & M University; the National Center for Atmospheric Research; and the Boulder, Colorado Springs, and Health Sciences campuses of the University of Colorado. He is currently developing a theory of how quantum mechanical phenomena may mediate the mutual relationship between consciousness and the states of complex systems; and a methodology for integrating the contributions of cognitive scientists, quantum physicists, and consciousness and spirituality researchers in interdisciplinary programs that investigate the interface between the inner and outer worlds. His theory proposes a solution of the age-old mind-body problem: appropriately configured complex systems export their alternative states or “options” via the entrainment of vacuum fluctuations and the associated formation of “computational” wave functions that represent and enable the conscious exploration of these options; while the conscious choice of preferred options triggers the collapse of the wave functions, with “entangled” consequences at multiple locations that instantaneously fine-tune the state of the system, moving it toward the preferred state. His methodology shows how his theory, as well as many alternative theories of conscious systems, can be tested systematically in interdisciplinary scientific programs. His hope is that a new “paradigm” for studying the relationships among quantum phenomena, complex systems, and consciousness will emerge.
